It is explained that energy is the cornerstone of the evolution of life, and that virtually all living organisms obtain this energy through redox (oxidation–reduction) reactions mediated by highly similar respiratory chains. These reactions, in turn, drive the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate)—the universal energy-carrying molecule—through the mechanism of a proton gradient established across a thin membrane.

Following “The Birth of the Solar System and Its Structure,” the narrative turns to “The Birth of Earth and Primitive Evolution.” Here, it becomes clear that Earth’s most distinctive features—the presence of seawater and the alteration of oceanic crust and production of magma mediated by that water—created the conditions that gave rise to the revolutionary organic system known as life.
